Dream Camera – The List of Requirements

My dream camera would be:

  1. Light weight with a smallish body. When I rented the Pentax k-s2, I realized I couldn’t go back to a full size DSLR. By the end of the day, I was just wanting to put the camera down somewhere instead of taking pictures. I want my dream camera to be in my hands all of the time.
  2. Image stabilization built into the body. This helps when you are hand holding the camera a lot more than the image stabilization built into some camera lenses.
  3. A good selection of native lenses at lower prices. This is my biggest gripe with the Sony a6000. With other cameras I can buy an autofocus 50mm f1.8 prime lens for about $125. With Sony I’m looking at about $150. Sony cameras also have fewer options when it comes to third party lenses.
  4. Decent low light capability. A decent low light capability means being able to take a picture hand held without it being blurry or noisy because the ISO was bumped up to high.
  5. A flash sync speed with third party flashes at higher than 1/200 of second. This also goes with low light shooting.
  6. Weather sealing. There have been times I wanted to pull out my camera, but didn’t want to damage because of the rain. My dream camera is one I can use any time.
  7. A touch screen. Just about everybody is now used to using touch screens on phones, tablets, and laptops. I find myself trying to touch the screen of my a6000. It would make using the camera much easier.
  8. The ability to charge the camera battery while it is in the camera. This is another thing I love about my a6000. I can charge the battery through the USB port. Why dont more camera manufacturers do this?
  9. An electric view finder (EVF). The EVF truly allows you to see almost exactly what you are recording on the camera. This is the main reason I like mirrorless cameras.

Is my dream camera out there?

After doing some research, I don’t believe that there is a single camera that meets all of these needs. I think the closest might be the Olympus OM-D EM5 Mark II. It is a camera well outside my budget. I will probably settle on an EM10 Mark II. B&H camera has a package deal with both a 14-42mm and a 40-150mm lens for $700. This would probably suit my needs nicely. It’s not my dream camera, but I don’t think it is currently out there.

Update: I was looking around on eBay and I may have a lead on a used EM5 (not Mark II) with a lens for less than $200. It has a cracked LCD screen. But, a $90 replacement screen and 15 minutes work will fix that. Considering that a refurbished EM5 without lens would cost over $480, this is not a bad little camera for less than $300.

Update 2: I didn’t win the auction. It went into a price range that I just don’t think the camera was worth it. I’ll just need to keep on saving money so I can get something close to my dream camera.
